“I hope that people who listen to my music know that it’s okay to be who you are, to love who you are, to not know where you’re going, and to just keep growing and changing in ways you didn’t believe were possible.” - Nia J
BIO
Nia J, one of the rising voices of the Charlotte music scene, embodies a classic sensibility in her take on modern pop as she navigates being a Black, gay woman in the South. Her vocal performances cut the deadpan witticisms of contemporary pop coquettes with the grandeur of the 70s and 80s divas. The result is a mix that feels simultaneously old and new, as ready for TikTok as for the theater.
Her first release, Rabbit Hole (2021), introduced audiences to her signature songwriting style that is at once deeply personal and universally relatable. Her debut album Melomania (2024) takes listeners through Nia’s comforts and frustrations with personal growth. The Queen City Nerve called the album “the burgeoning pop artist’s definitive statement” with “a masterful use of cliches that imbue a folk sensibility.”
Nia J is back with her signature explorative sound in the new single, “Raising Hell.” Produced by Grayson Fernandez with Ike Byers and Te’Jani Inuwa, it's a playful, queer love song about falling for a free-spirited woman who feels like a force of nature. The music video, directed by Charlotte-based filmmaker Rudy Kovasckitz, embodies the infectious energy of the track, starring Nia J and with a special guest appearance from her wife. “Raising Hell” will be featured on her upcoming EP, “Southern Prima Donna” coming October 23rd.
